Rooted in the aesthetics of Chinese painting and calligraphy, the work adopts the format of a hanging scroll—an homage to classical forms—while subtly evoking the vertical orientation of today’s smartphone screens.At its core is an image composed of layered photographs of brushstrokes made by robots, printed onto silk. This image is further transformed through video projection created with TouchDesigner, introducing smudging and dissolving effects that alter and animate the surface. By fusing machine-made marks with digital manipulation, the work questions the boundaries between human expression and algorithmic precision. <img width="3648" height="5472" width_o="3648" Chen’s inquiry into historical architecture and museums, in both Paris and Singapore, which she developed to reimagine their histories and reconsider the roles these institutions play in contemporary society. Chen draws on the digital concept of the ”superquad“ from the digital software TouchDesigner – a shape capable of representing all possible forms. She juxtaposes this shape with the idea of ”heterotopia,“ which describes spaces layered with multiple meanings. Visitors can interact with the items in the containers that line the bar, resulting in subtle noises that will trigger the projection reflected on the wall behind the counter. The interaction between visitor and item mimics the transmission of coded messages–a function of the Battlebox in World War II to aid war strategy–and in turn, produces a visual resembling Morse code and sound waves. The sensitivity of the sound sensors are reminders of the nature of surveillance, pervasive in wartime, where citizens and military personnels are prompted to be discreet or silent in public places and social environments like cafes, restaurants and bars to avoid leaking military secrets.Placed in the same room as another interactive work, Drifting Signals (2025), these works explore surveillance and communication.&nbsp;Void Resonance (2025) transforms sound into visuals that mimic coded messages and wartime discretion, while Drifting Signals (2025) projects visitor silhouettes from tracked movements in the space. Together, these works evoke the atmosphere of World War II espionage, heightened by reproduction of wartime posters and emphasised by constant observation and a form of behavioural censorship in a world where actions are always watched and analysed. This work was commissioned by Global Cultural Alliance(GCA) as part of the exhibition PORTALS, at Battlebox Singapore. Single-channel video. Dimension variable Botanical Paradigm presents a series of imaginary plants that I developed during her three-month residency at INSTINC. The exhibition takes its title from the concept of a ‘paradigm’—a distinctive set of ideas or thought patterns that serve as a lens for observing and understanding the world. Through the paradigm of fictional botany, I seek to challenge and reconsider conventional perception s of nature and reality, conducting a dialogue that bridges the natural and the synthetic, the traditional and the technological. Following the transformation of these imagined plant species across multiple media, from traditional techniques such as drawing, and embroidery to digital technologies like 3D animation and videography. The interplay between craftsmanship and contemporary digital practices serves as a metaphor for the evolving nature of thought, showing how our perspectives shift with technological advancements. This exhibition is part of my ongoing transmedia storytelling project, FACTORY, which explores a transmedia storyworld centered on a fictional biological laboratory called ‘FACTORY’, that focused on the research of HANDS, EYES, PLANTS, and OBJECTS. In this evolving storyworld, FACTORY functions as both a research center and an archive for my creative experiments, offering a space where scientific inquiry and artistic expression converge. connection between ‘Soup’ and ‘Notebook,’ merging these seemingly distinct elements as vessels for information, memory, and data. Beginning with the definition of ‘soup,’ the video delves into the artist’s imagination, drawing associations and juxtapositions between the concepts of soup and notebooks.This visual essay plays with language, particularly through the phrase ‘hanging the soup,’ a direct translation of the Chinese term ‘吊高汤’ (meaning ‘making the broth’). In cooking, this process involves simmering bones, meat, seafood, or vegetables to extract a concentrated broth, with the solids removed once their essence has been fully drawn out. It aims to explore a new approach of storytelling. It was first inspired by Chinese Buddhist art and traditional European art. I am investigating the mythology and symbolism in different cultures, trying to look for the similarities and possible intersections, and connections between them. By reorganising, intertwining, and combining the elements that appeared the most in the different cultures and arts, such as ‘hands’ and ‘eyes’, I reimagine a new story about a fictional historical institute, ‘FACTORY’, that focused on the research of HANDS, EYES, PLANTS and OBJECTS. In FACTORY, I have redefined the conventional notions of space and time by situating them interchangeably. It also involves the re-appropriation of traditional Buddhism and European Art. By re-contextualising, and redefining the elements, such as Hands and Eyes, I am introducing new symbolisations and meanings within my storyword. Those familiar cultural content will be presented in an uncanny, unusual way, unveiling the novel logic and rules of the storyworld to the audience. As such, the storyworld of FACTORY may be challenging to comprehend due to their divergence from reality. In order to provide an immersive experience, I will train the audience step by step, to evoke their interests and lead them into the storyworld by using transmedia storytelling.First part of FACTORY, the introduction video FACTORY: The Information Portal,&nbsp;was exhibited at the exhibition ‘Pressure Drop’ at SomoS Art House Berlin, together with the video work ‘Study of Hands’ and the illustration series ‘100 Ideas of Hands’. ‘Pressure Drop’ was part of the 48 Stunden Neukölln Art Festival 2022. Second part of FACTORY, the video installation First Contact, was exhibited at the exhibition ‘Nine in the Afternoon’ at PROJECT SPACE, LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore in 2023. In 2024, FACTORY was showcased at Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, as part of the Master of Arts, Fine Arts graduation exhibition, ‘This is not a monster’.&nbsp;In the graduation show, FACTORY presented in four parts: 1. FACTORY: The Information Portal - the introductory video, 2. First Contact - a two-channel video installation, 3. FACTORY Archive - HANDS and EYES - a series of drawings of hands and eyes, 4. forms and movements of hands. The project is inspired by Dunhuang grottoes art. Dunhuang is an ancient oasis town located at a religious and cultural crossroads on China’s Silk Road. The grottoes art in Dunhuang is the finest example of Buddhist art, that had spanned over a period of 1000 years. A few years ago, I came across a catalogue of Zhang Daqian's copies of Dunhuang mural paintings. I was fascinated by the fluent lines and beautiful colour of Buddhist art. What intrigued me the most is Gandharva (Flying Apsaras), who are the gods in charge of holy songs and dances. It was during this process when I discovered my interest in hands, which in fact had already been used as an element in some of my previous projects. My interpretation of hands as a symbol for communication solidifies. Gesturing is a language in itself, as shown by the sign language. Furthermore, gesturing is a language that conveys more emotions than words. Instead of accurate expressions of thoughts, gesturing is more spontaneous, if not intuitive. Working with the murals makes me appreciates the elegant drawing of hands in Dunhuang Buddhist art. Not only the shapes are impeccably reproduced, but the brushstrokes also embed movements in the hands, rendering the drawing more vivid and dynamic. This is the most well illustrated in the paintings of Gandharva. One can almost hear the music from the instruments through their gestures. I was therefore spurred to bring the underlying movements in the drawings alive through modern technology. I copied the hands from the mural paintings and converted them into animations. By digitalising the shapes of the hands and overlaying the movement of the hands with music created by digital software, I would like to show the possibility of modern technology in engaging with and
